Embracing the Families, an online fundraiser, is a new initiative to raise funds to support the families of missing and murdered women. In efforts to raise awareness and encourage donations, a social media campaign entitled, “Stop the Silence” has been created by project collaborators, The Mix 3 Productions Ltd., an Aboriginal owned media company based in Vancouver, B.C. “Stop the Silence” includes a powerful performance poem written by Canadian slam poet, Khodi Dill and First Nations rap artist, Theresa Point as well as moving songs and performances by an incredible range of other Aboriginal artists (including Juno award winner Murray Porter, Michelle Richards, Digging Roots and Andrea Menard). It will move and inspire everyone who watches.
Beverley Jacobs, currently working with Ending Violence Association of BC as its Indigenous Communities Project Consultant, (former Amnesty International researcher and past president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada) founded this initiative. The intent of the monies raised is to provide a venue and organized gathering for family members of the disappeared and murdered. The purpose of the family gathering is to initiate a National Charitable Organization, to develop the structure of it, to have family members as board members and decision makers, and to formulate the needs of family members (whether it be financial, spiritual and physical needs specific to families of loved ones who are missing and specific to families of those loved ones who are found murdered). It is hoped that it will help raise enough money to organize a family gathering in the coming year, so that families can network together and develop strategies to ensure that families get the support that is needed at the grassroots level.
The Embracing the Families is dedicated exclusively to raise funds necessary to make this gathering possible. As partners in this initiative, Amnesty International has agreed to receive and hold funds until they are ready to be directly administered for the event. 100% of the proceeds will be dedicated to the gathering. The date and details of the planned gathering has yet to be determined.
The success of the online fundraiser will help determine the size, timing and location of the gathering. Please go to www.yourmix.ca/benefit.html to view the social media campaign, “Stop the Silence” and the amazing songs by powerful musicians. The link to the donation page to Amnesty is there as well. Please donate and pass on the PSA and online benefit concert to all of your friends and contacts. Please support the EMBRACING THE FAMILIES initiative.
