Do you want to be a part of a strong team that truly makes a difference? It cannot be emphasized enough how important access to justice, legal information and advocacy are for women’s long term safety and freedom from violence. Through accessing ADTS Legal Advocacy Services women are able to leave their abusive relationship, receive more fair custody and access orders increasing the safety for the children, able to have a voice in mediation proceedings and very importantly having access to legal representation in their legal cases.
Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
ADTS is seeking a visionary, exceptional and energetic Legal Advocate. The Legal Advocacy Program provides legal information, advocacy, advice and support, mainly in the area of family law to women dealing with legal issues at the intersection of gender violence and family law recognizing that legal issues routinely extend into other areas of the law including immigration, criminal, and child welfare. The Legal Advocate reports to the Clinical Director and Executive Director.
Provide legal information, legal advice, and summary of case law, legal research and general assistance to women in building strategies for their legal cases.
Work from a decolonizing and intersectional feminist analysis of violence against women
Interview women, and at time men, assess/analyze legal problems, assist in resolving legal problems, assist clients preparing for court, and preparing documents.
Provide consultation and support to ADTS staff related to legal advocacy issues
Maintain an excellent working knowledge of emergent legal-social issues related to violence against women and to seek solutions.
The ADTS Legal Advocate must:
Minimum 2 years’ experience working with legal issues related to women who experience violence in relationships preferably within family law
Analysis, knowledge and training in working with trauma survivors
Excellent advocacy and problem-solving skills
Strong decolonizing and intersectional feminist analysis of violence against women
Demonstrated cultural competency including awareness of diverse marginalized communities and ability to work with clients from various cultural communities
Ability to speak language(s) other than English an asset
Have experience in women’s organizations and non-profit society environments
Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Be personable, flexible and self-directed
