Substance Use Support Resources

Survivors may use substances to cope with emotional and physical effects of the assault which can lead to substance use challenges (Ullman et al., 2018).

The following substance use support resources are available in BC:

The 24/7 Addiction Medicine Clinician Support Line provides telephone consultation to physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, midwives, and pharmacists involved in addiction and substance use care and treatment in British Columbia. Consultation can include support in screening, assessment, treatment, and management of substance use and substance use disorder(s).

  • This service also provides addiction medicine guidance to any addiction support staff calling from Indigenous communities and urban centres within BC.

The Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) program connects primary care providers to their specialist colleagues for urgent advice.

  • Primary care providers can either place an online request or call a telephone line (1-877-696-2131) Monday to Friday between 0800 to 1700.
  • Provincial Specialty Areas include Addictions Medicine.

The Alcohol & Drug Information Referral Service (ADIRS) provides free, confidential information and referral services to British Columbians in need of substance use support.

  • Contact ADIRS toll-free at 1 800 663-1441, or in the lower mainland at 604 660-9382. Assistance is available in many languages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (HealthLinkBC, n.d.).
