BackgroundÂ
Evidence-based sexual violence prevention programs are urgently needed in high schools. Across Canada, 46% of all incidents of gender violence occur with women aged 15 – 24 years old(1). In British Columbia, reports like those from the McCreary Centre Society and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives show that the rate of sexual violence is increasing (2 p 72), (3 p 14).
While programs that are not evidence-based can actually increase perpetration or self-blame, research shows that evidence-based high school prevention programs are highly effective(6). There is increasing demand from schools for violence prevention programs and training; however, there is still a lack of education and implementation support to help high schools identify and effectively deliver these programs.
The overall goal of our project is to greatly reduce sexual assault by entrenching in our Province’s high school education system the inclusion of evidence-based programs and practices proven to decrease gender violence perpetration and victimization.
Job SummaryÂ
The Assistant Project Coordinator/Researcher will be responsible for supporting the overall coordination and implementation of the project, including education and outreach, outcomes tracking, and program delivery.
Using existing research on evidence-based gender violence prevention, including PreventNet, Primary Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls, and Promising Practices: Healthy Relationships and Dating Violence Prevention Programs in Canadian Schools, the candidate will compile information on evidence-based programs that are proven to reduce gender violence in youth. Then, using the compiled information, the candidate will conduct outreach and information sessions with schools, students, and community members. The candidate will have support from a team of school personnel, gender-based violence researchers, and volunteers as they grow into this role.
Together with a co-facilitator, deliver the Flip the Script sexual assault resistance program to self-identified women aged 16-19. The Assistant Project Coordinator/Researcher, must be available for 6 days of training, between the last week of April and first week of May (exact dates TBD).
