We are proud to be a partner on the YWCA Metro Vancouver’s My Concussion Story, together with the Department of Justice Canada, SOAR (Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury through Research), and The Cridge Centre for the Family.

“We know so much more now about the long-term consequences of concussions, especially in professional and amateur sports,” says EVA BC’s executive director, Ninu Kang. “But brain injuries have long been a dire consequence of intimate partner violence, and part of the continuum of violence abusers use to maintain control over a partner sometimes without leaving a visible trace. This campaign makes it clear that we must recognize and address the impacts of violence and ensure survivors get the timely and appropriate help they need.”

It is estimated that violence by an intimate partner causes more than 290,000 concussions among women, girls and gender diverse people in Canada each year. For every 1 NHL concussion, it is estimated that more than 7,000 women suffer the same injury by an intimate partner.  

They partnered with former Olympian and NHL player, Trevor Linden, to bring attention to this staggering statistic and call for increased research, better pathways for concussion treatment and more support for people who have experienced traumatic brain injury as a result of intimate partner violence.
