At EVA BC we have been eagerly awaiting news of BC’s budget for the coming year.
Now the provincial government has released Budget 2025.
We can see that we are in times of fiscal challenges; however, it appears that the work we are doing to respond to gender-based violence will continue to be supported.
To ensure that the key issues identified by anti-violence leaders and frontline workers that impact survivors of gender-based violence are top-of-mind for policy makers, we have reached out to request and schedule meetings with key ministers.
We have already met with the Attorney General and Deputy Premier, Niki Sharma; the Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, Jennifer Blatherwick; and the Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives, Jessie Sunner; and are scheduled to meet with the new Minister for Children and Family Development, Jodie Wickens, in April.
We have raised concerns that there is little direct mention of gender-based violence initiatives in this budget or the recent ministers’ mandate letters and have been assured of the province’s continued support of our work and ongoing initiatives, within any needed budget constraints.
