Community Based Victim Assistance Program (VAP) Coordinator

The Islands Wellness Society is looking for a caring individual with a passion for, and knowledge about, supporting victims and their families in our communities though the criminal justice system.

  • Permanent, part time position (18.5 hours per week) based out of Daajing Giids working with a small and mighty feminist, consensus-based community organization.
  • Wage commensurate with experience. Range of $25 – $28/hour with a generous staff wellness approach and benefits package.

 

Job Summary:

The VAP Coordinator works to lessen the impact of crime and trauma on victims and their families, thereby assisting in their recovery. The coordinator will strive to increase victim safety and to help reduce the risk of further victimization; to increase the level of participation and sense of empowerment for victims throughout their participation in the criminal justice system; and to increase the effectiveness of a victim while acting as a witness in court proceedings. These services will be provided to all victims of all types of crime who may or may not have reported the crime to police or be involved with the criminal justice system. The program serves southern Haida Gwaii (Daajing Giids, HlGaagilda Skidegate, Tllal Tlell, and Kil Kun Sandspit).

 

Qualifications:

  • Possess a combination of education, skills and experience sufficient to meet the needs of the program;
  • Minimum of one year experience in a related discipline;
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Email, Teams, and on-line data entry);
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently (self-motivated and well organized) and as part of a team;
  • Adheres to the constitution, philosophy, policies and procedures, code of ethics of the Islands Wellness Society;
  • Signs and adheres to Oath of Confidentiality;
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of First Nations culture and Haida community is an asset;
  • Knowledge of court proceedings, victim rights, and the Family Act an asset; and
  • Own vehicle (including insurance to/from work with minimum 1 million liability) and possess a valid driver’s license. The program will provide an upgrade to ‘business use’ and 2 million liability insurance); and
  • Some work may be required outside normal office hours.

 

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program Service – Provides emotional support and relevant information specific to the unique concerns and needs of victims. This may include supporting participation in the justice system, and providing information related to the justice system, and/or case-specific information.
  • Community Service – Establishes and maintains working relationships with local community, government, justice, police, health and other service providers to facilitate coordination, minimize service duplication and maximize referrals across agencies.
  • Administration – Maintaining all administrative and legal requirements (records management, program statistics, reporting) associated with the role, the provincial contract, and the Islands Wellness Society.
