Stop the Violence (STV) Outreach Worker

The Islands Wellness Society is looking for a caring individual with a passion for, and knowledge about, supporting and increasing the safety of women and children in our communities.

  • Permanent, part time (16.5-19 hours per week), based out of Daajing Giids working with a small and mighty feminist, consensus-based community organization.
  • Wage commensurate with experience. Range of $25 – $28/hour with a generous staff wellness approach and benefits package.

 

Job Summary:

The Outreach Worker will embark on community networking initiatives aimed at increasing the safety of women and children. The worker will develop and deliver culturally appropriate public education initiatives to raise awareness of the effects of violence against women; of violence prevention; and of services available to women who have experienced violence, abuse, or threats. The worker will provide support and assistance to women who have experienced violence and provide local transportation, when needed. The worker will also be responsible for maintaining the Community

Coordination for Women’s Safety committee. The program serves southern Haida Gwaii (Daajing Giids, HlGaagilda Skidegate, Tllal Tlell, and Kil Kun Sandspit).

 

Qualifications:

  • Combination of education, skills and experience sufficient to meet the needs of the program;
  • Minimum one-year experience in providing services to women who have experienced violence and providing outreach or similar services;
  • Specific training providing services to women who have experienced violence;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both organizational and front-line contexts;
  • Computer skills and knowledge of applicable software and internet programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams);
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently (self-motivated and well organized) and as part of a team; Demonstrated knowledge of First Nations culture and Haida community is an asset;
  • Knowledge of community-based programs, services and related provincial and community support systems;
  • Knowledge of the justice system, in poverty, mental health, tenants’ rights, Workers rights and related statutes;
  • Additional training as paralegal, counsellor, group facilitator, mediator/adult educator and community development worker and asset;
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Adheres to the constitution, philosophy, policies and procedures, code of ethics of the Islands Wellness Society;
  • Signs and adheres to Oath of Confidentiality
  • Own vehicle (including insurance to/from work with minimum 1 million liability) and possess a valid driver’s license. The program will provide an upgrade to ‘business use’ and 2 million liability insurance); and
  • Some work may be required outside normal office hours.

 

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Community Liaison and Coordination Work. Maintaining relationships, coordinating and collaborating at an inter-agency and multi-sectoral level to identify and address service and safety needs of women and children.
  • Public Education Work – Developing and delivering culturally appropriate public education to raise awareness of the effects of violence against women, violence prevention and services available to women.
  • Front-line Work – Supporting women who have experienced violence, abuse or threats.
  • Administration – Maintaining all administrative and legal requirements (records management, program statistics, reporting) associated with the role, the provincial contract, and the Islands Wellness Society.
