Coercive control is present in the lives of many, if not most, of anti-violence workers’ clients. The Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children (CREVAWC) describes coercive control as “omnipresent and psychological in nature, affecting all aspects of life for the one subjected to the abuse”, and explains that “the abuse often permeates many or all facets of life including, but not limited to, personal hygiene, sexual relationships/performance, relationships with family and friends, finances, and performance of household duties”. Because so many aspects of their lives are monitored and controlled, those subjected to coercive control cannot easily escape it. Please see the attached EVA Notes for more information on coercive control, and a list of helpful resources.
