This March, our Community Coordination for Survivor Safety (CCSS) team travelled to Tofino to facilitate two all-day training sessions.
The meeting was held on the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation territories, one of the 13 Nuu-chah-nulth Nations, and participants at the sessions came from across a wider area that includes Toquaht, Yuu-cluth-aht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Ahousaht, and Hesquiaht. Levi Martin, a Tla-o-qui-aht elder opened the event with a welcome.
The first day was a session called Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Assault where attendees reviewed the social context of sexual violence, impacts of sexual violence trauma as well as options available for survivors and how to provide support when receiving a disclosure from someone who has been sexually assaulted, and resources available in the region.
“This training was very helpful and presented in a really supportive and coherent way.”
“It was great to hear more about what is available specifically for the West Coast (resources).”
“It was great, I liked all the videos – such empathetic presenters – great job!”
“There was a lot that touched what I need to know and wondered about. I found it very helpful.”
“So much great info! Great collaboration between sectors.”
“I am impressed with what I learned, great facilitators. I understood and learned quite easily.”
“Very successful. Appreciated the openness and willingness to answer questions.”
The second day was a Third Party Reporting (TPR) training session. This was open to frontline service providers and managers from victim services, counselling and outreach programs, police, and others interested in learning about Third Party Reporting as an option for survivors of sexual assault. The goal of this training is to increase sexual assault survivors’ access to support and reporting options.
