Sage Haven Society (Sage Haven) is a non-profit organization providing services throughout the Alberni Valley and surrounding area to women and children affected by violence. Sage Haven is seeking applications for the position of Stopping the Violence Counsellor (STV). Our STV women’s counselling program provides individual counselling for women currently in or who have been involved in abusive relationships, are survivors of childhood abuse, and/or are survivors of sexual
assault.

Purpose:
Counsellor assesses impacts on clients, determines group readiness if applicable, and provides one-to- one supportive psycho-educational counselling to women in crisis with a direct and proactive goal to provide safety, referral, immediate assistance, and short-term service to those who are in or have left abusive relationships, are survivors of childhood abuse and/or are survivors of sexual assault. Provides group and individual counselling to those 19 years or older.

Site: Main office of Sage Haven (3082 3ʳᵈ Avenue, Port Alberni)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Skills:

• One-on-one supportive counselling experience with women who have experienced various forms of violence and abuse.
• Knowledge of and experience in violence and sexual abuse trauma and behavioural outcomes.
• Flexibility and able to work with internal staff and refer to external agencies.
• Knowledge of community resources and services.
• Knowledge of vicarious trauma.
• Good boundaries and healthy in own life.
• Ensure services will be accessible to all women regardless of race, religion, culture, sexual orientation or social/economic conditions.

Education and knowledge:

• A bachelor’s degree in related human/social services field.

Training and experience:

• Two (2) years recent related experience or, equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Experience in counselling within a feminist framework.
• Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques.
• Recent specialized training in trauma-informed practice and /or abuse.

Salary: General Service Collective Agreement – Health Sciences Association Grid Level 14P. The wage rate ranges from $38.68 to $48.88/hour. This is a Union position.

Start Date: Immediately.
